HARRY

BASS GUITAR AND VOCALS

My favorite song we’re currently playing live is:
Please Please Me by The Beatles

Like many of his generation The Beatles appearing on Ed Sullivan inspired Harry (Lansingburgh) to learn to play guitar. He began playing “by ear” to figure out the popular songs that appealed to him. He formed several bands with school mates and played at parties and other events. It was during this time he bought a Hagstrom I bass and taught himself how to play it. Blues music became popular among his age group and his first club gigs were with a blues band called Turpentine.

After relocating to Los Angeles, he lived with the woman who would become his wife. Through her he entered healthcare, an occupation he would follow for the next forty years. Four years spent on the West Coast passed quickly and when he returned to Albany, the disco era had passed and New Wave was replacing it. Harry joined a group called the Fun Snaps. The drummer would later become Lee Harvey Blotto. His next notable band was a trio called The Checkers. He played the area’s local clubs including 288 Lark, Electric Grinch and The Chateau. Danny, our drummer, would later appear on David Letterman with Pete Droge and then ascend to be president of Sony Records.

Next he answered an ad to join a wedding band, The Phil Restifo Quintet. This meant a significant change in venues and wearing a tuxedo and the song list was much more sophisticated including many standards like Duke Ellington’s “Take the A-Train”. The musicians, older than him, showed him playing techniques he missed being self taught. He eventually moved back to the Capital District and played resorts during the summer season. Harry used those dates to reestablish himself as a guitar player and began playing solo, closer to home. He also began going to open mics where he met the musicians with whom he plays currently. He says his present band mates are making this group a lively, joyful experience. “Making music in a band creates bonds that last a lifetime.”
